The Flavor That Followed Me Across Continents

Growing up back home, the kitchen was my playground. While other kids were outside, I stayed close to the pots and pans, right beside my mother as she cooked. I wasn’t there just to watch — I was there for the little spoonfuls of food I got to taste long before dinner was ready.

My father tried countless times to chase me out, even warning me that “boys who stay in the kitchen won’t grow beards.” I didn’t mind — because while the beard was uncertain, that early access to fresh flavor definitely wasn’t. Those moments with my mom planted the seed for my love of spices. She was a master at blending flavors, never measuring, just creating — intuitively and beautifully. I soaked it all in.

Years later, when I moved thousands of miles away from home, the taste I grew up loving was suddenly out of reach. That familiar comfort of home-cooked seasoning became something I missed deeply. Instead of letting that memory fade, I set out to recreate it — for myself first, then for others.

As I met people from different cultures and backgrounds, I realized flavor is universal. The right mix of spices can make anyone feel at home, no matter where they are from.
